Badgemore Park

Henley-on-Thames

The Design

The project called for the integration of three contemporary wellness pods within the established walled garden of Badgemore Park Golf Club. The pods were to accommodate a range of wellbeing-focused uses. The design needed to marry modern architectural forms with the character of the existing garden walls, creating a calm, restorative atmosphere aligned with the ethos of health and wellness.

Given the anticipated five-year lifespan before a potential permanent building extension, the scheme required a design approach that was both impactful and mindful of its temporary nature.

The design introduces a clean, contemporary layout that responds to the geometry and scale of the main building while visually connecting the new wellness pods to the wider garden. A soft, prairie-inspired planting scheme brings movement, texture and seasonal interest, helping the modern intervention sit comfortably within the character of the historic flint and brick walled garden.

With the project’s short lifespan in mind, the scheme focuses on creating atmosphere through simple, well-proportioned design rather than permanent built features. Expensive elements such as water features and large specimen trees were avoided, allowing the layout to centre on clean lines, generous borders and planting that delivers immediate impact.

The three pods are arranged to create a clear but connected layout. Pods 1 and 2 sit together with shared outdoor space, while Pod 3 is positioned separately near the main building entrance, giving it privacy while maintaining a relationship with the existing business. Vertical slatted fencing, stained to match the pods, provides screening for the B&B patio and outdoor fitness rig, while also creating a strong backdrop for planting.
